I’VE ALWAYS NOTICED IT’S FAIRLY COMMON TO HEAR STORIES ABOUT DIFFERENT FAMOUS PEOPLE BECOMING DEPRESSED, SUICIDAL, HOOKED ON DRUGS ETC. WHY IS THIS?? WHY WOULD SOMEONE GET DEPRESSED WHEN THEY HAVE THE WORLD’S BEST JOB, MAKE THE MOST MONEY, AND ARE ADORED BY THE ENTIRE WORLD? BUT WHY DO THEY PUSH IT TO THE EXTREME TO THE POINT OF ATTEMPTING SUICIDE. I ALWAYS SEE ON THE NEWS ….

Most of us have probably wanted to be celebrities at one point in our lives. We have dreamed about the fame, fortune and glamor that comes with it. Many people are even obsessed with celebrities and popular culture. However, there's unfortunately also a darker side than often seems to be associated with celebrity status - addiction to drugs, alcohol and painful bouts with loneliness and depression. So, what factors do you think cause this to happen? What exactly does it mean to say that someone "can't handle fortune and fame"? Is it work-related stress, lack of privacy, sleepless nights, a feeling of fakeness or inability to live a normal life? Do celebrities become depressed because they are no longer as popular as they once were, or because their personal wealth declines sharply as they grow older ?

I think money has a lot to do with it. These are people that are constantly being told how great they are, how pretty or handsome they are, how talented they are, and so on. I think they get really full of themselves because of that. It is devastating to them to have a movie they are in flop, or be out of the limelight for too long, or have a scandle they are connected to. They kind of live in a glass bowl. They have to keep their curtains closed because otherwise papparatzi will take photos of them. They must shred their mail and anything written on because the paps go through their garbage. They cannot go out to eat, or to the movie, or to an amusment park, most anywhere, and not be recognized and draw a crowd want an autograph, a picture, their time. They must be diligent with their children to protect them and their privacy. I think there is a lot of pressure when you are in the publics eyes. They do not have normal lives for the most part. I imagine that can stress you out a lot and it is easy to begin drinking or doing drugs. These people are surrounded by others that use, and they get offered some if they'd like. I think the root of it all is money and needing a break from the craziness. I've felt insecurity many times in my life, but it never caused me get addicted to drugs or feel like ending my life. It made me want to avoid the source of my insecurity or overcome it in some way.... Seif Kabelele...

WTF? Are you serious???? As if you can even ask why!! They are constantly harrassed by papparazzi, the press, haters and critics. Every day of their lives are surrounded by criticism and pressure to be what people want them to be. Most singers and actors who get hooked on drugs go that way because of the pressure of always having to perform and act a certain way to please fans and critics. Their lives would be ten times as stressful as the busiest person you know. try to sympathize.... Nandine

Because fame and fortune is an illusion. We live in a soulless society that has placed too much value on something as meanginless as large stacks of green paper and the admiration of a bunch of babbling idiots....Miyeye

Why do they push it to the extreme and try and commit suicide? Imagine this: Your society tells you that money, fame and power is the peak of the mountain. You expend unbelievable amounts of energy and cope with huge amounts of stress to get there, and you find out that life is no brighter up there. You just exchanged one set of problems for another. Society has our priorities mixed up. If you're not happy without money you are not going to be happy with it. The art of being content is the realm of wise men throughout the ages. This is old, old stuff. People never learn, there have been unhappy rich people since there were riches to acquire. There have been people who are dirt poor and perfectly, blissfully happy. Maybe that's something we should all ponder from time to time......Gueseppe

Because some are not capable of handling the pressure that comes with fame , imagine yourself as a celebrity, unless you know something that everyone else don't you don't really have much of a job security, will you still be able to find work next month? can you still afford your current lifestyle ..when you go out, are you concerned about your image, safety, or can you even go out at all , what can you do to keep doing what you do, are you even still relevant........... Pachiane

Being harassed by everyone is the worlds best job? and lots of people get depressed, but celebrity depression is made public obviously.................Kapeche

It's called being human. Just because a bunch of people know of your existence and brings you money doesn't change the fact that they still have human emotions and sensations...Indira
